One of the most commonly read, taught, and referenced sections of G.W.F. Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit is what gets called the "Master-Slave Dialectic". It is an early part of the portion of the work called "Self-Consciousness", and some of that section is really needed in order to make full sense of the discussion centering on the master and slave (or lord and bondsman) dynamic.
Some time back, I created a set of podcast lectures leading through those paragraphs from the Self-Consciousness section. The six episodes run about 70 minutes total, so a listener can get through the entire set in the course of a decent workout, walk, or commute. Here are links to the entire sequence.
- Desire, And Spirit
- Ambiguity & Duplication Of Self-Consciousness
- Self-Consciousness And Mediation
- Self-Consciousness And The Struggle To The Death
- The Master's Position
- The Slave's Development
